Here is a viewpoint that crossed my mind as I went about my job as a juvenile court attorney today.

Juvenile court proceedings are confidential. Therefore, I can't share with you the specifics of what happened today or the specifics of what happens with any child or parent client.

However, it is fine for me to share with you my overall impressions from my work and how said impressions might help you become The Man in all realms of your existence.

So here we go: My work as a Guardian Ad Litem and as a parent's attorney in juvenile court here in Nashville goes like this: If I am Guardian Ad Litem, I represent the interests of my minor child client. The age of said child client ranges from an infant who was born merely days ago to a teenager 17+ who is about to be a legal adult.

Parent's attorney representation is different. Most of our cases are related to illegal drugs, domestic violence, mental health concerns, or a combination of all three. We also take on physical abuse and sex abuse cases.

Our system is not a criminal system. Rather, the consequences are court-ordered restrictions on contact with your child.

My early days as a juvenile court attorney brought the "hard sell" case regarding parents who were before our court.

"Why are they choosing drugs over their children?" I would wonder. I would confer with them with this sort of angle.

I began practicing in the dependent and neglected child system in 2006. Since then, my angle toward parents has changed.

In a sense, the new angle was described in the New Testament book of John. John writes that Jesus met with a Samaritan woman at a well. Jesus' ministry carried him to a town called Sychar at about midday.

Here is the short version: Jesus asks the woman for a drink of water. The woman calls into consideration their differences - Jew and Samaritan. Jesus offers the woman "living water".

The kicker comes when Jesus challenges the woman to call her husband and to bring him to the well with her. She responds that she has no husband.

Jesus: “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

The ending was that the woman believed in the living Christ. Many others from the town joined her in this belief.

It should be noted that Jesus took a vastly different approach to a woman who had had five husbands and who was in a domestic relationship with a man who she was not married to. What would have been expected in that day was not followed by the son of God at all.

It's a "new set of glasses". Two individuals who were far apart culturally were able to connect socially - Thanks to Jesus. To God be the glory.

More to come soon.
